Expanded Partnership: Introducing Cyber Kiesel — AI-Powered Pathway Security for Donkeys
Just one week after announcing our strategic partnership with KI-Esel GmbH, we're excited to unveil the first major product of our expanded cooperation: Cyber Kiesel—a comprehensive AI-powered security platform that protects donkey delivery operations across both physical and digital domains.
And yes, it scans for dangerous pebbles. We'll explain.
The Pebble Problem
"People underestimate how dangerous a pebble can be to a donkey's operation," explains KI-Esel CEO Dr. Christoph Heiko Kiesel, whose family name—meaning "pebble" in German—makes him uniquely qualified to address this issue. "A single sharp stone lodged in a hoof can sideline a donkey for days. Multiply that across a fleet of 847 donkeys, and you're looking at significant operational risk."
According to KI-Esel's internal data, pebble-related incidents account for:
- 23% of all unplanned donkey downtime
- 847 hours of lost delivery capacity per quarter
- €124,000 in annual veterinary and farrier costs
- Countless grumpy donkeys
"When we founded this company, people said 'Kurz & Kiesel scanning for Kiesel? That's too on the nose,'" adds CTO Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Paul Kurz. "But sometimes the universe gives you a naming opportunity, and you take it."
Introducing Cyber Kiesel
Cyber Kiesel is a dual-domain security platform that combines real-time physical pathway scanning with comprehensive digital infrastructure protection. The system leverages IWS's computer vision technologies, running inference on our lws64.da1.eu-west and amor.bay1.eu-west clusters.
Physical Pathway Security
The physical security component uses advanced computer vision to scan donkey routes in real-time:
- PebbleNet-V3: A custom vision model trained on over 2.4 million images of pathway hazards, capable of identifying dangerous stones as small as 4mm with 99.2% accuracy
- Real-time terrain analysis: Continuous scanning of the path ahead, classifying surfaces by hoof-safety score
- Hazard prediction: ML models that predict where dangerous pebbles are likely to accumulate based on weather, terrain, and historical data
- Dynamic route adjustment: Automatic path corrections to avoid high-risk zones
The system categorizes pebbles into five threat levels:
- Level 1 (Green): Smooth, rounded stones — safe to traverse
- Level 2 (Yellow): Irregular stones — minor discomfort possible
- Level 3 (Orange): Sharp edges detected — route adjustment recommended
- Level 4 (Red): Highly dangerous debris — immediate avoidance required
- Level 5 (Black): "That's not a pebble, that's a rock" — full route recalculation
Digital Pathway Security
But Cyber Kiesel isn't just about physical pebbles—it also protects the digital pathways that keep KI-Esel's fleet connected:
- API endpoint monitoring: Real-time scanning of all communication between donkeys and cloud infrastructure
- Anomaly detection: ML-based identification of unusual patterns that might indicate cyber threats
- Encrypted bray-to-cloud communication: End-to-end encryption for all donkey telemetry
- DDoS protection: Because apparently someone once tried to DDoS a donkey (we don't ask questions)
- Firmware integrity verification: Ensuring NeuroHoof™ units haven't been tampered with
"In the modern threat landscape, a donkey faces dangers from both sharp stones and sharp hackers," notes Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Paul Kurz. "Cyber Kiesel addresses both."
AI-Enhanced Donkey Goggles
For donkeys who want even more situational awareness, KI-Esel is introducing an optional hardware upgrade: AI-Enhanced Goggles (officially branded as "EselVision Pro™").
These lightweight, donkey-ergonomic goggles feature:
- Heads-up display: Projects pathway safety information directly into the donkey's field of vision
- Pebble highlighting: Dangerous stones are outlined in red using augmented reality
- Navigation arrows: Subtle directional cues for optimal path selection
- Treat detection: Alerts when customers are holding carrots (high priority notification)
- Social overlay: Identifies friendly donkeys in the vicinity for potential socialization waypoints
The goggles are entirely optional—KI-Esel emphasizes donkey autonomy in all hardware decisions.
"We conducted extensive focus groups with our donkeys," explains Dr. Christoph Heiko Kiesel. "37% showed strong interest in the goggles, 28% were indifferent, and 35% tried to eat them. We consider that a success."
Early adopter donkeys have reported (via biometric mood analysis) a 23% increase in confidence when navigating rocky terrain and a 45% faster response time to carrot-bearing customers.
IWS Infrastructure
Cyber Kiesel's computer vision backbone runs entirely on IWS infrastructure:
- PebbleNet inference: Deployed across 512 H100 GPUs in our German regions
- Latency: Sub-50ms pebble detection, enabling real-time avoidance at standard donkey walking speeds (4 km/h)
- Throughput: Processing 4.2 million pathway images per hour across the fleet
- Heat output: Cyber Kiesel inference heats approximately 34 apartments—we call them "pebble-warmed homes"
The training of PebbleNet-V3 required 1,800 H100-hours and a dataset that included:
- 1.2 million images of German hiking paths
- 600,000 images of alpine terrain
- 400,000 images of urban cobblestones
- 200,000 images of pebbles that Dr. Kiesel personally found "particularly threatening"
Security Certifications
Cyber Kiesel has achieved several important certifications:
- ISO 27001: Information security management (for the digital pathways)
- SOC 2 Type II: Because enterprise customers asked, and we aim to please
- DIN EN 13594: Protective gloves for professional use (accidentally, while certifying the goggles)
- Donkey Welfare Council Approval: Confirming the goggles do not impair donkey dignity
Pricing
Cyber Kiesel is available as an add-on to existing KI-Esel logistics contracts:
- Cyber Kiesel Basic: €89/donkey/month — physical pathway scanning only
- Cyber Kiesel Pro: €149/donkey/month — physical + digital security
- Cyber Kiesel Enterprise: €249/donkey/month — includes 24/7 security operations center staffed by humans who understand donkeys
- EselVision Pro™ Goggles: €1,200 one-time purchase + €29/month for AR content updates
Volume discounts available for fleets over 50 donkeys. Goggles come with a 30-day "donkey satisfaction guarantee"—if your donkey doesn't like them (as measured by MoodNet™), full refund.
Availability
Cyber Kiesel is rolling out immediately to all KI-Esel donkeys operating in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The EselVision Pro™ goggles enter beta testing next month with a select group of "technologically curious" donkeys identified through personality profiling.
"This is just the beginning," says Dr. Christoph Heiko Kiesel. "Today we're scanning for pebbles. Tomorrow, who knows? Puddles. Suspicious squirrels. The possibilities are endless."
About Cyber Kiesel: A joint product of IWS and KI-Esel, Cyber Kiesel provides comprehensive physical and digital pathway security for donkey logistics operations. Named after both the German word for "pebble" and co-founder Dr. Christoph Heiko Kiesel, because sometimes nominative determinism is too perfect to ignore.
